Debra Hunter Johnson has over 30 years of experience in human capital management, risk mitigation and law. She has led transformative initiatives for organizations ranging from startups to multinational corporations across industries including airline, automotive, energy, healthcare, entertainment, restaurant, and retail.

Known for her ability to align people, culture, and strategy, Debra helps organizations navigate complex workforce challenges that directly impact risk, revenue, and growth. Drawing on her extensive experience as Associate General Counsel, Vice President of Human Resources, and business strategist, she delivers actionable, results-driven solutions that strengthen culture, drive innovation and enhance organizational resilience.

Her expertise spans workforce management strategies, union relations, leadership and career development, employee engagement, talent acquisition, retention and upskilling, DEI initiatives, conflict resolution, unconscious bias, harassment and discrimination prevention. She is a sought-after consultant, trainer, and speaker on leadership, culture, and governance.

Debra’s corporate leadership includes serving as Associate General Counsel for American Airlines, where she managed a team of 25 legal professionals overseeing domestic and international employment law, benefits, litigation, environmental, immigration, and the company’s Business Ethics Office.

As Vice President of Global Human Resources Services at American Airlines, Debra led a team of more than 100 HR professionals across the U.S., Latin America, Canada, and Mexico. Key accomplishments include:

  • Directing all serious employee misconduct investigations and discipline for 80,000 employees.
  • Creating and implementing the company-wide “Value of Respect” training program for all employees.
  • Designing a comprehensive onboarding program for directors and officers and revamping employee recognition programs.
  • Serving as culture and diversity leader, developing a DEI strategy focused on people, suppliers, customers, and community.

Debra holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from Howard University, where she was Symposium Editor of the Howard Law Journal. She also completed the Caruth Institute for Entrepreneurship program at Southern Methodist University.
